X06 Keynote - Did We Get What We Wanted?

In short no. But we did get some things we weren't expecting.

Let's talk about HD-DVD first.
We were expecting £199.99, but instead we can get it with King Kong and that remote we don't have for £129.99 at the end of the year. Bargain. Brilliant. We can get 1080p through our VGA cables and still not have to upgrade anything. We can't argue.

What also works is this "you don't have to sign up to the Hi Definition medium if you don't want to" stance. Unlike the PS3 you aren't forced to choose a format yet enroll in the war, you can simply choose not to invest in it. Which we're sort of considering. No one knows who'll win out of the two, it's a shame the talks broke down when they were trying to agree on one format. The way things are going we really want HD-DVD to win, we're just fed up with Sony now.

Anyway this Christmas you can choose to go HD-DVD if you see fit. Play.com have some titles up with HD-DVD titles coming tomorrow apparently? Blu-Ray is due to hit next week.

So on the HD-DVD front we have got what we wanted, an affordable drive before xmas. Tick.

Next stop - RARE.

Now we were praying for something from these guys. We've ignored everything about Viva Pinata so far, probably giving it a go when it arrives but to be honest we're not as enthused as we would have been about another Perfect Dark, or Goldeneye on marketplace or dare we say it KILLER INSTINCT 360. They're churning out less stuff than ever now, and we get a hint of a Banjo Kazooie title. Which is nice.

That'sts all we can say really. It's been a while since Tooie, people have left Rare, they made Starfox Adventures and Kameo. Are we getting a remake of the first title? Can they shock us and instead roll out a lovely trilogy pack, two old revamped titles and a new exciting one? It's hard to tell.

Maybe we shouldn't moan really. We've had Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo and they're chucking out Pinata soon so that's three titles. But its not the Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong, Banjo Kazooie / Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong, Conker which all had that Rare quality and timing.

I mean this is Microsoft for gods sake, where's the company that will happily exploit the Halo franchise? Why aren't we seeing the next Jet Force Gemini? Give Rare more staff. Why haven't you thrown money at Nintendo and given us Goldeneye?

Anyway, enough of that.

What else did we see? Ah, the good stuff we'll get to play soon... Gears of War still looks great, we'll happily get that on day of release.

Splinter Cell 4, yup we'll have that. Can't wait for it. Couldn't be happier with the exclusive for number 5. You nearly slipped up with that one didn't you Mr Moore?

And the stuff we will get to play soon. We've never looked at Assassin's Creed before. The name simply didn't make us want to know more about the game. But thank god we saw that footage! We are going to be able to climb any wall we want! Hang on, we did that in Spiderman. Ok shitty jokes aside we actually did like the look of it, the crowd thing was cool and it looks fun.

That Lost Odyssey just looked confusing and boring, and then Bioshock looked interesting if not dark and dreary. We still don't really know what that's about either but hey.

The biggee though, the master of all, is back...

Gotham 4! Lovely, thanks. We do like em, even though we do get soooo frustrated with them. Hard to believe its at number 4 already though.

Finally Halo stuff. Peter Jackson went on about some ideas he has for the Halo universe while he's playing round with the film. We didn't quite get that either, it felt reallclumsysy and unrehearsed but you can't help but listen to him. Even if you don't take it in. We think he's trying to invent a new genre. It's not a game or a film, something else.

No Halo 3 content. That was disappointing. We expected some footage or something. Just anything. A black screen with some Halo music followed by the number 3 would've done it. Instead we get Halo wars.

It's too early to judge, but we're going to. Are we going to want to play this? Well not on the 360. We can't stand playing those kinds of games on a console. Stick it on the DS. Hmmm. Okay we'll settle for "Games for Windows".

You know we just didn't come away with that feeling we got from anything to do with the Wii. There was nothing surprising or shocking.

Right we're done. Off to go play Doom or something. You did ok Microsoft, nice touch with getting Doom out quickly.
