Would Microsoft Bother With A New Controller?

It seem's the Immersion technologies have been showing off a brand new type of force feedback, one that varies more depending on what you do.
For example in a first person shooter:
- You'd actually become more familiar with what weapon you've changed to, you'd feel it
- Firing something like a rocket launcher would give more push than something like a pistol
The thing is wouldn't this more "extreme" force feedback require more power? If so would Microsoft be willing to say their new pads have about 2 hours of battery life? Would they bring the cables back? We don't know.
Also Peter Moore's been very verbal about the 360 controller design after seeing what the Wii can do. He's hinted that a simpler controller could be round the corner for the XBox too.
Either way we may see some new form of controller soon, but if we lose buttons are we going to be able to play our games? Will they pull a Sony and just copy Nintendo - imagine a Wii-mote without it's motion sensing capabilities and just a load of XBox buttons all over it.
