XBox 360 Homebrew Door Blown Open Or Just Slightly Ajar?

Simply using the More Programs feature you can run up Internet Explorer, Explorer, Solitaire and whatever really. In theory you should be able to run DivX stuff too but we haven't had the time to try yet.
If you go to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Centre\Media Centre Programs folder and add in a file that ends with ".mcl" and edit in in notepad to contain something like:

You can browse anything on your pc! Just not very easily!
The extender seems to pretty much work as a remote connection to your PC, so your actually running this stuff on your PC, not your XBox. Hence why the door is only really slightly ajar because we're cheating really, you can run anything you want on your pc to your XBox. Think MAME and other wonderful emulators, and being able to watch DivX on your box finally.
This could be a cheeky way in for people to start doing stuff with the 360. Already there are useful apps to consider that people made for Media Centre which i've been using for a little while now like MyUk which lets you stream a lot of Internet TV, lottery or football results and other cool stuff to your PC. They do it by using the same method as that link we gave you above to direct you to a website they've formatted specifically for the remote control, and of course goes straight to your XBox 360 too!
As you can see its cool stuff, but unfortunately requires a Media Centre PC!

No that should "in theory" be completely possible - was talking through it with a mate last night.
Not sure how it would look on the telly though - would think you'd only get the benefit if you were running HD.
Also i don't think you'd get mouse support...

But in all fairness (and I'm really not trying to be a dick), I would like to ask...what content do you want to watch on the 360 that is in Divx? I'm not aware of a single content provider (save Bit torrent) that commonly uses that format. I'd be interested to know why it is so important - other then to watch DVD rips illegally stolen via p2p....

Why do we want to watch downloaded movies on the XBox 360? For the same reason PSP users want a PSP hard drive, or the same reason people are buying iPod video. Or maybe its due the the actual complete success the DivX codec has?
Other than watching DVD rips illegally stolen from bittorrent, we can watch TV rips and porn too. Oooh hang on, we may also want to watch some of our mates DVD's we backed up too.
All theoretical of course.

eh, this won't work like you think. Depending on your network bandwidth and CPU power, you won't get more than 10 fps executing applications using the 360 as a media center extender. Normally audio and video (tv, music, etc) is sent through a seperate data stream in a format (mpeg, etc) that the extender can uderstand. Thus the smoother and faster experiance (more fps).
If this is similar to Remote Desktop, then it will not be good to stream divx or pc gaming, it would be very choppy.
The minimum spec for a media centre is pretty high anyway, so unless you've built your own like us you shouldnt have a problem streaming stuff - we never have. We ran the 17GB hidef version of the Two Towers last night and truth be told it ran better on 360 than it did on the actual pc.
But we did give a couple of apps a go and we had no actual problems, we'll give some games a go at the weekend and let you know how we go.
any new info on this? I created a link as described above and it worked on my MCE computer, but it does not show up on my Xbox360. Is there another trick to making it show up in the more programs folder of the 360?
Hiya, yeah you may need to play around with which user's folder you put it into under C:\Documents And Settings - i think it should be ALL USERS but it may need to be the MCX1 or another one. Best bet is to drop the link into each one and play around with it.
I haven't tried anything new since i wrote the article, sorry!
